The Libertarian Party of Chemung County Executive Committee Comments on Town of Veteran Local Law Opt-Out for Cannabis Law Article 4

Elmira, New York, October 6, 2021: The Libertarian Party of Chemung County (LPCC) comments on an upcoming vote in the Town of Veteran regarding opting out of Cannabis Law Article 4.

A public hearing was set for June 17, 2021 for the purpose of considering the opt-out for the referendum in November 2021. The minutes from the regular meeting of the Veteran Town Board (May 2021) can be found here

The LPCC stands by the Libertarian Party platform, which states that:

1.1 Individuals own their own bodies and have rights over them that other individuals, groups and governments may not violate. Individuals have the freedom and responsibility to decide what they knowingly and voluntarily consume, and what risks they accept to their own health, finances, safety, or life.

2.1 As respect for property rights is fundamental to maintaining a free and prosperous society, it follows that freedom to contract to obtain, retain, profit from, manage or dispose of one’s property must also be upheld.

Regarding growing, processing and distributing cannabis, the LPCC echoes Larry Sharpe’s policy, which reads, “Growing, processing and distributing both marijuana and hemp should not be regulated any more than other agricultural crops.” Farming and agriculture have historically been an important part of the community in the Town of Veteran.

The LPCC encourages the people of the Town of Veteran to vote “no” on this referendum to encourage local farmers to cultivate the products they choose in order to contribute to positive economic development in the Town of Veteran.

Furthermore, the LPCC stands behind the need for a free market in Chemung County that allows entrepreneurs to prosper in the businesses of their choosing, and to provide consumers with in-demand local products and services.
